September is National Cholesterol Education Month, which is a great time learn more about how cholesterol affects our health. Most people know that high cholesterol = bad and low cholesterol = good, but the actual impacts on the body aren’t always as understood. For example, in addition to increasing your risk for heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure can also impact your hearing. Let me explain.
As we discussed in our July blog, your inner ear is home to thousands of tiny sensory cells that convert sound into signals in your brain. These delicate cells rely on a steady flow of oxygen-rich blood to function. When cholesterol levels are high, fatty deposits (plaque) can narrow blood vessels and reduce circulation. Your hearing health depends very heavily on good circulation.
Research suggests that poor circulation may:
*Contribute to age-related hearing loss (aka presbycusis)
*Increase the risk of sudden sensorineural hearing loss,
*Be linked to tinnitus (ringing in the ears).
In other words, keeping your heart healthy isn’t just good for your body, it’s good for your ears too.
What can you do?
While we can't always control our risks for certain conditions, the good news about cholesterol is that lifestyle choices play a huge role. These are things that you can control! Here are some general tips:
*Stay active. Even 30 minutes of walking most days can improve circulation.
*Choose heart-healthy foods. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins support blood vessel health.
*Don’t smoke. Smoking damages blood vessels and can accelerate hearing loss.
*Schedule regular checkups. A cholesterol screening and a hearing test together give you a clearer picture of your overall wellness.
Take Action this Month!
National Cholesterol Education Month is a great reminder to schedule your cholesterol check. While you’re at it, consider booking a hearing exam as well, especially if you noticed changes like turning up the TV, asking people to repeat themselves, or hear ringing in your ears.
At Clark Audiology, we believe your hearing health is an essential part of your overall well-being. Call us today to schedule your hearing test.
